Wheels and Handle
What it is
Wheels and a telescoping handle are the two parts of a case that are not really the case. They are hardware bolted to it, they are outside the shell, and they are the parts that fail first.
Thirteen of the forty-seven listings describe wheels or a handle in some form: spinner, four wheels, dual spinner wheels, multi-directional, silent, 360, telescoping. All of these are configurations. None of them is a measurement.
That distinction matters more here than anywhere else on the site, because these are precisely the parts that are added to the object after the body has been measured.
Why it matters
It decides The Baggage Belt.
Because a frame at a gate measures across the wheels, and a body size does not include them. The gap between the two is small, consistent and always in the wrong direction.
Because a telescoping handle left extended adds several inches of height to the tallest dimension, and it is the position a case is usually in when it reaches a gate.
Because on a belt these are the parts that break. A loaded case landing on an extended handle is the most common way a case is retired, and no listing here says anything about it.
What gets written instead
- Spinner, which means the wheels rotate freely in every direction, and which appears on most of the case listings here.
- A count, such as four wheels or four multi-directional wheels, which is genuinely useful and still not a size.
- Silent and 360, both of which appear on one listing and neither of which is testable as written.
- Telescoping handle, on exactly one listing, with no extended length given.

A stated size is the size of the body. Wheels, feet and an extended telescoping handle are not usually counted inside it, and the frame at a gate counts all of them.
How to get the number yourself
- Stand the case upright with the handle fully down and measure from the floor, not from the bottom of the shell.
- Extend the handle fully and measure again. Keep both figures; the second is the one you will be holding at a gate.
- Measure the width across the widest point of the wheel housings, which usually sit proud of the shell.
- Roll the case on a hard floor and on carpet. Spinner wheels behave very differently on the two, and no listing mentions either.
Worth being careful about
- A stated body size does not include wheels, feet or an extended handle, and the frame at a gate includes all three.
- Silent, durable and scratch-resistant are seller words with no rating and no method behind them on any listing here.
- No listing in this catalog states a wheel diameter, a handle height or an extended handle length.
- A luggage cover fits over the shell and generally not over the wheels, so it changes one measurement and not the other.
